The launch of Gaudium 2021 marks the end of an exceptional year for Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres, recognized as one of the 50 most admired wine brands on the planet (18th place, according to the website and magazine International drinks). In addition, winemaker Fernando Costa was included among the 100 best winemakers in the world, and his president, Cristina Forner, was awarded the Best Professional Career Award in La Rioja. The recognition strengthens the winery’s role as a global reference in elite wine.
Careful preparation

The vineyards are located in Rioja Alta, on plots between 400 and 650 meters high, and in Rioja Alavesa, on terraces up to 740 metres. It originates from calcareous clay soils on limestone rocks, in steep valleys, and is only suitable for small vineyards. Its yield is very low, less than a kilo per plant.

In its preparation, a very precise protocol is followed. Harvesting is done by hand, in 15 kilo boxes per small lot, with bunches selected after pre-chilling the grapes for hours. Pumping is done by gravity and fermentation is slow, with whole grains in stainless steel and wood vats. It’s made with local yeasts, and developed in stainless steel and wood vessels. Before malolactic fermentation, all movements are carried out by gravity and with the utmost care.
The wine is matured for 18 months in new, fine, premium French oak barrels that come from the best forests. It is then refined for at least two years in the bottle before reaching the market. The wine contains an alcohol content of 14.5%. The ideal serving temperature is 15°C.
Exceptional wine
The quality of the 2021 vintage has a lot to be thankful for in terms of weather conditions. Rainfall was 30% more than average, although erratic. After a warm February, with normal germination, a warm and dry May was recorded, with excellent vegetative development; June and many days in July with moderate rain and favorable weather, and September again experiences water that allows for optimal ripening. The mild, dry climate allowed for a slow, sporadic harvest. Between the end of September and October the grapes reach the ideal point.
In the mouth, the wine stands out for its powerful, enveloping entry, with sweet, polished tannins that provide volume and softness, and its palate balanced with strength and delicacy.
The result is a red wine with great character. When viewed, it is a deep burgundy color, with dark reflections. A complex and sophisticated nose discovers ripe black fruit, spices, and earth covered in soft, perfectly integrated wood. In the mouth it is characterized by a powerful and enveloping entry, with sweet and polished tannins providing volume and smoothness, and a mid-palate balanced with strength and delicacy. The finish is long and persistent, with hints of spice and noble wood. His style combines strength, harmony and elegance. This exquisite red, made exclusively from very old vines, is a gem for every lover of great moments, whether gastronomic or not.
