The long-awaited hearing of Jorge Mesías, nominated by President Lula for a vacant position on the Federal Supreme Court, will no longer be held this year. Amid a scenario of hidden tension between the executive and legislative branches, the confirmation of the name of the Attorney General of the Federation will take place until 2026. The postponement is a direct result of the political maneuverings led by the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolombre (Uniao-AP), who has imposed a “brake” on the process.
Conflict behind the scenes
Although Messias’ nomination was made official by President Lula in the Official Gazette, he faced barriers in the Senate. Davy Alcolombre claimed that he had not received the official documents needed to proceed with the ritual, which led to a dead end.
Ricardo Noblat says the delay in sending documents by the government was actually a deliberate strategy. The goal will be to buy time for Messiah to perform the traditional “kiss of the hand” – the ritual of visiting offices, speaking to senators and obtaining the necessary votes, a kind of “pre-Sabbath” one-on-one. The Colombian, in turn, tried to speed up the setting of the date precisely to shorten the window of political expression for Lula’s candidate.
Lula denies the crisis but criticizes the budget
Despite the deadlock in the committee’s agenda, President Lula has publicly denied the existence of an institutional crisis with the Senate. In his final statement, Lula said: “Do you think we in the government have any problem with the National Congress? We don’t.”
But the president did not spare any criticism of the current resource distribution model, and classified Congress’s control of 50% of the federal budget, through mandatory amendments, as a “grave historical mistake.”
Confirm postponement
Senator Randolph Rodriguez, leader of the government, confirmed the futility of a vote in 2025. According to the senator, the suspension of the date by Alcolombre, coupled with the lack of formal guidance and the tight deadline until the parliamentary recess, made the hearing impractical this year. “It’s a topic we will address next year.” Sentencing Rodriguez
Christ is trying to please the Senate
In a move to gain the sympathy of parliamentarians, Jorge Messias asked Minister Gilmar Mendes to reconsider the decision that determines who can request the dismissal of Ministers of the Supreme Court. The situation was read as an attempt to “communicate” with the political class, but the request was rejected by Gilmar Mendes, who considered the claim inappropriate.
Political balance
Ironically, the postponement imposed by Alcolombre may end up favoring the Planalto Palace. With the hearing scheduled for 2026, Jorge Messias gains a valuable opportunity to rally support and secure his approval, turning the “delay” into a strategic opportunity to establish his name among the senators.
