X, by Elon Musk, was fined R$742 million by the European Union

On Friday (5/12), the European Union imposed a fine of 120 million euros (about R$ 741.7 million, at the current price) on Company X (formerly Twitter), a company owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

This action was taken due to violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA).

This is the first penalty applied under this legislation, which was approved three years ago with the aim of combating illegal and dangerous content published by digital platforms.

According to the EU investigation into X, Musk’s social network committed a series of violations of European legislation, including misleading practices in verifying user accounts.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, is also investigating the former Twitter company for alleged violations of legislation related to the publication of illegal content.

What Twitter/X will have to do

Elon Musk’s company will now have 60 days to inform the EU of any measures it intends to take to prevent the “misleading use” of blue verification badges, as well as 90 days to submit an “action plan” on transparency in advertising and access to public data.
