Federal Supreme Court Minister Flavio Dino has set the date for the trial of those accused of killing Councilwoman Mariel Franco and the driver Anderson Gomez, on March 14, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro on February 24 and 25.
Dino, who chairs the first committee, responded to a request from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the criminal case being processed in court.
Understands
- The rapporteur of the process, Moraes, asked Dino to include the trial on the agenda of the First Committee.
- All defendants were arrested and tried for the murder of Mariel and her driver Anderson Gomez.
- The trial is scheduled to be held in two sessions in February.
The dates are set after the completion of the entire preliminary phase of the process, which included witness testimony, questioning of the accused, and the presentation of final arguments by the Office of the Prosecutor, the Assistant Prosecutor, and the Defense.
The criminal action includes Domingos Brazão, Counselor of the Tribunal of Auditors of Rio de Janeiro (TCE-RJ), former federal MP Chiquinho Brazão, Delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, Ronald Paulo Alves Pereira and Robson Calixto Fonseca.
All of them are responsible for premeditated murder, attempted murder and criminal organization – crimes related to the death of Mariel and the driver Anderson Gomez – and the attempted execution of Councilor Fernanda Gonçalves.
The complaint, already fully received by the First Commission, indicates that the Brazão brothers, former Civil Police Chief Rivaldo Barbosa and Prime Minister Major Ronald Pereira, participated in the coordination and execution of the attack. Robson Calixto is accused of being part of a criminal organization involved in the planning.
Mariel’s death
Councilor Mariel Franco and driver Anderson Gomez were shot dead on March 14, 2018, in central Rio de Janeiro. But the crime remained unsolved for nearly six years. After an operation carried out by the Federal Police on March 24 last year, those behind the murders were arrested.
Chiquinho Brazão, as well as his brother, Counselor of the Rio de Janeiro State Chamber of Accounts (TCE-RJ) Domingos Brazão, and former Civil Police Chief Delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, were arrested after being reported by Ronnie Lissa, who fired the shots that killed the councilwoman and her driver. All are still detained.
