The PSOE sent an internal memo on Friday to members of the federal executive and key officials of the autonomous federation directorates, in which it expressed its regret for “not providing adequate support” to affiliates who filed two anonymous complaints of sexual harassment and abuse of power against Francisco Salazar, one of Pedro Sánchez’s closest collaborators in the campaign for his re-election as Socialist general secretary in 2017 and who has since played a key role in Ferraz and Lao. Moncloa. The party expresses its regret, saying: “Communication with anonymous complainants was not at the required level and needs to be improved.” “We are saddened that this happened,” the document adds.
“The content of the published complaints details behaviors that are disgusting, unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the Socialist Party,” continues the two-page letter, in which the main government party affirms its commitment to “always improving in the fight against harassment of women and in developing equality policies.” Sánchez made no direct or implicit reference to the issue this week, which sparked massive anger within the party.
The Socialist Workers’ Party informed the provinces that the complaints filed against Salazar last July, that is, five months ago, are “now being analyzed and compared” by the anti-harassment body “by the deadline, as stated in the protocol” of the training, as reported by the newspaper eldiario.es. The next step will be to compile them into a report with conclusions that will include proposing measures to be adopted by the party. “This will be conveyed to the parties and to the secretariat of the organization,” says Ferraz in the memorandum that was sent, in addition to members of the party leadership, to the general secretaries, organization secretaries, equality secretaries and spokespersons of that autonomous region.
