Caiado maintains prior nomination and says he ‘respects’ Flavio’s choice of Bolsonaro in 2026

The governor of Goiás state, Ronaldo Caedo (UN), said he “respects” the decision of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who chose his eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), to represent him in the presidential race next year. Caido, who has been trying to become viable with the support of the former president, says he is still a pre-candidate, despite being passed over. Earlier, the president of the Brazilian Federation, Antonio Rueda, complained about “polarization in 2026,” after announcing the selection of Flavio.

He said in a statement, “It is a decision made by former President Jair Bolsonaro with his family, and it is up to all of us to respect it. He has the right to seek to make the candidacy of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro viable. For my part, I remain a pre-candidate for the presidency and I am convinced that we will remove the Workers’ Party from power next year and return Brazil to the Brazilians.”

União Brasil must form a union with the People’s Party. As Globo showed, these parties, along with the Social Democratic Party and the Republicans, who have been promoting a right-wing candidacy against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, do not agree with Flavio’s choice to run for Palacio do Planalto. Now some of the group’s parties are considering adopting neutrality in the presidential elections.

There is an understanding that the parliamentarian will not have the support of centrist parties, such as the Brazilian Union, the Popular Party, the Republicans, and the Social Democratic Party, because the prevailing assessment in these parties is to reject any candidacy bearing the title of Bolsonaro. The idea of supporting Flavio was discarded due to an assessment that the parliamentarian, like any member of his family, rejects Bolsonarianism. They also say that Flavio did not score as well in the electoral polls as Tarcisio.
