Trump invites Sheinbaum to return to Washington for another meeting

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2019 (Xinhua) – US President Donald Trump invited Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to return to Washington for another meeting after the first meeting they held on Friday, the Mexican president said.

She told the press about the tripartite meeting she held with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney after the 2026 World Cup draw that took place in Washington: “We talked about many issues and agreed to continue working. The good thing is that it was a very friendly meeting and I am leaving on a very positive note.”

Sheinbaum said that during the hour-long meeting, they did not talk about reviewing the T-MEC free trade agreement, which Trump intends to let expire, but he stressed that they “will continue to work.”

According to the president, Trump considers Mexico a “great and extraordinary country,” and revealed that he invited it to return to the American capital.

He said, “Yes, he also invited me to come to Washington again, and we will agree on a date.”

The President made these statements at the conclusion of a meeting with the Mexican community in the United States, which took place at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington after the lottery was held.

On her first visit to the US capital since becoming president, Sheinbaum was received at the institute’s door by people carrying flags and banners, in addition to a mariachi band.

Sheinbaum said on social media that the meeting with Trump and Carney was “excellent” and that it represents “a great opportunity provided by the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the three countries and the good relationship between them.”

“We agreed to continue working together on commercial issues with our teams,” he added. The meeting comes after Trump indicated on Wednesday that he would likely let the USMCA, a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, which must be reviewed in 2026, expire, and that he would seek a new trade agreement with his neighbors.

The Republican declared that Mexico and Canada “benefited” from the United States economically.

However, upon arriving at the draft party on Friday, Trump said he got along “very well” with Sheinbaum and Carney. Evie
