Former minister says party needs to organize itself to face challenge of ‘threat of war’
BRASILIA – Former Civic House Minister José Dircío said on Friday the 5th of this month that he had a “hunch” that Brazil would witness a “revolutionary moment”, through the inclusion of benefits to society such as income tax relief for the poor. Dirceu coordinates one of the groups that will draft the campaign platform of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) for re-election.
“I have a hunch that Brazil will witness a revolutionary moment. The question is whether, at the level of that moment, we will be able, in this Congress, to provide our party with the law and organization to meet the challenge. The challenge is the risk of war,” Dircio said during an event in the Workers’ Party this evening, referring to the political awareness of Brazilians who, he said, have become class-conscious thanks to measures such as tax reform, and the exemption for those who earn up to R$5,000. From income tax and the possibility of reducing working hours.
The Workers’ Party’s National Directory met in Brasilia on Friday to discuss the 2026 elections and build the platform of Lula’s government. In a statement published by the party, the party stated that Brazilians were suffering the effects of the “crisis of capitalism,” defended a “courageous” debate on public security obstacles and listed the reduction of work schedules as a major goal of a potential Lula IV government.
During the meeting, PT President Edinho Silva stated that PT members will hold discussions until April 2026 to define strategies aimed at re-electing Lula. There was no mention of the selection of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) as Bolsonaro’s running mate who will face the president next year.
At the meeting, the head of the Persio Abramo Foundation, Paulo Okamoto, announced that he would leave the leadership of the Workers’ Party think tank. It has not yet been determined who will replace Okamoto in this role, which is strategic to shaping the 2026 PT project.
