An important biscuit factory suspends 2,300 workers in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, December 5 (EFECOM).- Argentine biscuit manufacturer Mondelez has furloughed 2,300 workers indefinitely, according to local media reports on Friday.

The factory, which produces products for the brands Óreo, Terrabusi, Cerealitas, Tita, Rhodesia, Club Social and Pepitos, among others, has decided to stop production at its factory located on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, company sources confirmed to local media.

The company explained that “this mode is for operational planning and adaptation” and that “in order to maintain the long-term sustainability of the activity, planned maintenance tasks will be carried out.”

The decision came after agreement with the Food Industries Workers Union (STIA) and the internal committee to grant licenses to workers during that period.

Union president Sergio Escalante said, “After difficult negotiations, it was agreed that the workers who agreed would receive a week of leave and another week of paid leave would be given.”

Escalante also expressed that the situation reflects problems in the industry due to the decline in demand and the opening of imports.
