
The Brazilian Army, through the Planalto Military Command, mourned the death of Corporal, victim of a fire that struck the 1st Guards Cavalry Regiment (RCG), on Friday (12/5).
The body of Maria de Lourdes Freire Matos (Featured image), 25 years old, was found charred at the headquarters of RCG’s first orchestra, Fanfarra.
“The Military Fire Department of the Federal District was called immediately and, together with soldiers of the 1st RCG, brought the fire under control. The soldier’s family receives all necessary support from the Planalto Military Command in this moment of pain,” the command informed.
According to the army, an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of what happened, with expertise carried out by the Army Police Battalion in Brasilia, the Civil Police and the Fire Department.
The report found that Maria joined as a corporal in June this year. She was a power musician.
In a note posted on social media, the 1st RCG highlighted the corporal’s professionalism during his six months of service.
The battalion announced, “The 1st Guards Cavalry Regiment expresses its deep regret over the death of Corporal Maria de Lourdes Freire Matos, whose career in the institution was characterized by dedication, professionalism, and exemplary commitment to the service provided in the marching band.”
He added: “In this moment of pain, we express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and brothers in uniform.”

When teams arrived at the scene, they found a burning building and a large amount of smoke. Immediately, the army prepared hose lines for combat.
There was a large amount of flammable materials at the site. Nearby buildings were cooled, preventing the fire from spreading.
The fire was quickly brought under control, and during the cooling phase of the burning materials, rescuers found the charred body of a woman, whose identity remains unknown.
CBMDF experts and the Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) were called to the scene. The causes of the fire are still unknown.
