Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), said on Friday (5/12), that the decision of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to choose it as the name of Palácio do Planalto in 2026 had been previously discussed with the entire family, including Representative Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who has been in the United States since February. “Eduardo is someone who is with me 100% in this project. He is a great leader who fights for the freedom of Brazil, for the restoration of democracy in our country. He was certainly very happy about this step that was taken, which was obviously discussed with him and with the whole family,” declared the Senator.

Since he went into “self-imposed exile” in the USA and faced his father’s disqualification, Eduardo Bolsonaro has spoken about a possible pre-run for president. In fact, the parliamentarian’s name was included in the latest voting intentions surveys. With Flavio’s name chosen, it will now be up to the eldest brother to head up the family’s political plans.
Eduardo commented on his brother’s nomination on social media, saying that he received the news “with admiration, joy and pride.” The MP stated that the current political scenario requires “courage” and stressed that Flavio chose to run despite knowing the risks of a national campaign.
He wrote: “It is with deep admiration, joy and great pride that I receive the news of the nomination of my brother Flavio Bolsonaro (…). We all know that the people wanted our father as a candidate. That was the popular will. But the tyranny advancing upon our nation took this choice from the hands of the population. They thought they would silence us. They thought they would break us. That we would surrender. But they did not understand with whom they were dealing.”
The MP also explained that his brother would assume the task of representing the political project initiated by the former president. Flavio, according to Eduardo, “will raise the banner of our Father’s ideals” and will be “the face of hope in the midst of fear.”
Flavio is in the running for Planalto in 2026
Flavio Bolsonaro announced on Friday that he has been officially chosen by his father to run in the Palacio do Planalto elections, representing the Bolsonarians.
In a message on social media, the senator said he received the nomination “with great responsibility” and highlighted Jair Bolsonaro as “Brazil’s greatest political and moral leader.” He also said that he intends to continue the “Nation Project” started by the former president.
Flavio’s selection marks the first time that Jair Bolsonaro, currently imprisoned in a federal police prison in Brasilia, has publicly announced his intention to send a family member to Planalto.
In the Liberal Party’s internal assessments, the former president believes his son could strengthen his position as he takes on the role of pre-candidate, with trips around the country and cooperation with allies.
Flavio also enjoys the support of governors allied with Bolsonarianism, such as Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), in São Paulo, and Claudio Castro (PL), in Rio de Janeiro. The expectation in the party is that the senator will serve as a rallying point for the party and maintain the mobilization of the political base his father has built in recent years.
