Doha, December 6, 2019 (Xinhua) – The Prime Minister and Head of Qatari Diplomacy, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said on Saturday that the world is witnessing an escalation of crises “due to a lack of accountability”, at a particularly turbulent time in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Ukraine and many African countries.
Bin Abdul Rahman said during the opening of the twenty-third session of the Doha Forum, one of the most important platforms for dialogue in the Middle East, which was launched today in the Qatari capital, that “our world is witnessing an unprecedented escalation of crises, not because of a lack of resources or knowledge, but because of the absence of accountability.”
In his speech, the Qatari Prime Minister denounced that the lack of accountability “remains one of the most dangerous signs of defect” in the international system, which is “clearly reflected” in the Middle East, without explicitly referring to the war in the Gaza Strip.
Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, is considered the main mediator in the war in the Gaza Strip, and has denounced on several occasions the obstacles that Israel places in the way of advancing ceasefire talks and reaching the second phase, which provides for a permanent truce and the reconstruction of the Strip, among other points.
Likewise, the small Arab country also acts as a mediator in several African conflicts, and has hosted official talks between the government of Colombia and the Gulf Community, the largest criminal gang in the South American country, with Qatar, Spain, Norway and Switzerland acting as mediators.
Doha also played an important role in supporting the new Syrian government of current President Ahmed al-Sharaa after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime a year ago.
Specifically, the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived at the opening of the Doha Forum accompanied by Al Shara, one of the most prominent guests and speakers who will participate in this year’s edition of the event.
In his opening speech, the Prime Minister of Qatar noted that the challenges of the Middle East “are not separate from the decline we are witnessing in respect for international law,” stressing that “the world does not need more promises; it needs justice that turns words into actions.”
Participants in the Doha Forum include Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez; President of Ghana John Dramani; Prime Minister of Lebanon, Nawaf Salam; The president of the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, Nechirvan Idris Barzani, or the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan.
The ceremony was also attended by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chairman of the Gates Foundation and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates. Evie
