Madrid, December 6 (European Press) –

On Saturday, the Lebanese Army announced the arrest of six people for their alleged involvement in the attack on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) patrol in the south of the country.

The Lebanese Army indicated that during the night of 3 and 4 December, several unidentified armed persons attacked a UNIFIL patrol near the town of Bint Yabil, damaging one of their vehicles, although none of the Blue Helmets were injured.

He explained in a statement, “The army immediately began following up on the case to pursue the perpetrators, and as a result, the Intelligence Directorate arrested six people involved in the attack,” pointing out that if any such incident occurred, “they will not hesitate to pursue those involved.”

The army also recalled the “fundamental role played by UNIFIL in the area south of the Litani River,” its “close coordination” with the United Nations peacekeeping mission, as well as its “contribution to efforts aimed at restoring stability” in Lebanese territory.

UNIFIL indicated in a statement the previous day that “six men on three motorcycles” approached the “Blue Helmets” who were participating in a patrol near Bint Yabil, and one of them “fired about three shots at the back of the car.”

He said, “Attacks against peacekeepers are unacceptable and constitute serious violations of Resolution 1701. We remind the Lebanese authorities of their commitment to ensuring the safety of peacekeepers and demand a full and immediate investigation to bring those responsible to justice.”
