advice

For psychologist and professor of mathematics and statistics for competitions, Carlos Sprobo, the second stage of CNU requires a change of mindset regarding the previous stage. According to the expert, the candidate must abandon the emphasis on the large amount of content typical of objective tests to prioritize argumentative ability and clarity within the strict limits of up to 30 lines in the rhetorical test.

He highlights that at the higher level, assessment is divided equally between Portuguese language proficiency and specific knowledge, requiring the student to marshal theories and technical data with conceptual precision.

The first stage × the second stage

  • Sbrobow explains that the first phase is a thematic phase, with multiple options, and requires both general and specific knowledge of each block. The second stage is exclusively discursive.
  • Higher level: Two questions up to 30 lines long, 22.5 points each (45 total).
  • Intermediate level: One argumentative thesis essay of up to 30 lines, worth 30 points.
  • “In addition, the letter has an appropriate weight in the final weighted score, and may favor or disadvantage the candidate who performed well in the objective part, the first stage,” explains the expert.

The teacher warns against critical mistakes that could destroy the candidate, the most important of which is avoiding the proposed topic. The guideline is to read the statement carefully, underline key words and make sure that the answer is exactly in accordance with the committee’s order, as texts touching on the topic are usually left blank.
