The High Representative of Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU), Kaja Kallas, stressed this Saturday during a speech at the Doha Forum, Qatar, that some of the criticisms of Europe in the new foreign policy roadmap of US President Donald Trump, “are true”. “Europe underestimates its own power against Russia” he said.
“Of course there are a lot of criticisms, but I think some of them are also true” Kallas said during the mediation panel with Qatari Prime Minister, Mohamed bin Abdulrahman, Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, and Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan. “If you look at Europe, for example, it has underestimated its own power vis-à-vis Russia. I mean, “We should have more confidence in ourselves.”he added.
Trump on Friday released his foreign policy and national security strategy for his second term, in which he warns against possible end of European civilization because of his immigration policy and his promises to consolidate Washington’s leadership as a superpower, particularly in Latin America.
Among the main issues highlighted by the United States are the activities of the EU and other organizations that “undermine political freedom and sovereignty. “Immigration policies are transforming the continent and creating conflict; censorship of free speech and repression of political opposition; collapsing birth rates; and loss of national identities and self-confidence,” he adds.
“We want Europe to remain European, regain self-confidence as a civilization and abandon their failed focus on regulatory asphyxiation,” adds the document, which assures that the American objective “should be to help Europe correct its current trajectory.”
Kallas assured that the United States continues to be “the greatest ally” of the EU and that, according to his reading of the document, the EU also continues to be the greatest ally of the American country. “I think we haven’t always agreed on different issues, but I think we the general principle is still there. We are the greatest allies and we must remain united,” he stressed.
