The Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs and head of negotiations for the release of the hostages, Ron Dermer, submitted his letter of resignation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.
In the text, Dermer notes that he extended his term twice: “First, to cooperate in eliminating the existential threat posed by Iran’s military nuclear capabilities, and second, to end the war in Gaza on the conditions set by Israel” and return the hostages. He adds that Israel is now in a “victorious position that can herald a new era of security, prosperity and peace.”
Dermer also praised Netanyahu’s work since the October 7 Hamas attack, in which the militia kidnapped 251 people in Israel and killed 1,200, as well as in the Israeli government’s subsequent offensive against Gaza, which left more than 69,100 dead in the Strip.
The resigned minister is now considered one of the Prime Minister’s closest advisors. He handled important diplomatic matters, including relations with the United States, hostage negotiations during the Gaza War, and Israel’s relations with its Arab neighbors.
According to the Israeli newspaper The Times of IsraelThe Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yehiel Leiter, will assume some of his responsibilities. However, the media adds that Dermer — who was born in Florida and was also ambassador to the North American country — will continue to participate in efforts to expand the Abraham Accords and will occasionally serve as Netanyahu’s special envoy.
