Villanova began his sporting career at Logroñés and Deportivo Aragón, although he was also part of the locker rooms of Nastic de Tarragona, Mallorca and Betis. From this team he was signed by Real Zaragoza, where he played between the 1971 and 1975 seasons.

That same year, 1975, he left office, but returned to management and began his work as a coach, with a curriculum vitae that included the benches of Salamanca, Mallorca, Hércules, Sociedad Deportiva Huesca, Sariñena and Recreativo de Huelva. And he managed Real Zaragoza during three periods: between 1979 and 1981, 1978-1979 and during the 2007-2008 season.

Subsequently, he continued to be linked to the Aragonese team, since he participated in the training team and in the creation of different teams within the entity.
