BRASÍLIA — The PT decided, during a meeting of the National Directory this Saturday 6, to maintain its position in favor of the creation of an exclusive Ministry of Public Security, separate from the Ministry of Justice.

The theme was target of disagreements within the party this weekBut, according to the president of the PT, Edinho Silva, there is now a consensual position after the meeting.

“This is a consensual position within the party on the importance of creating the Ministry of Public Security. This does not mean that it is a government position,” he said.

The PT had removed from the party resolution an extract in which it called for the creation of this portfolio on Friday 5. But this Saturday 6, it backed down again.

The leader of the government in the Chamber of Deputies, José Guimarães (PT-CE), declared that there are two theses within the party on the theme of public security.

“There are two views: one that the issue of security will carry great weight in the elections and the other that I think this issue should not be brought into our fold. But I think we need to be as careful as possible on this issue,” he said.

For Guimarães, who is also president of the PT Electoral Working Group, there would be a positive repercussion if the creation of the Ministry of Public Security was part of the government’s re-election program.

“If we indicate in our government program that it will be consolidated now, I think it will have positive repercussions,” he said. “It’s an agenda for 2026.”

Faced with the security crisis, with the advance of criminal factions, the first version of the PT text, obtained by Stadiumpresented an excerpt that included the majority of the party leadership.

“Brazil needs a Ministry of Public Security and an articulated national policy, focused on intelligence, the fight against financial havens of organized crime and the protection of communities,” the document states.

The head of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowskiand the secretaries of the department are against the division of the ministry, on the grounds that it would weaken even the fight against organized crime. In a new configuration, the federal police, for example, would no longer be subordinate to the Ministry of Justice.

The meeting of the National Directory ended this Saturday 6, still waiting for the final adjustments to publish the final resolution of the meeting. “There are four texts, they will be combined to make one,” said Edinho Silva.
