The Supreme Electoral Tribunal, with the vote of André Mendonça, resumed the trial that decided to impeach the governor of Roraima. Antonio Denarium (PP)and the representative, Adelson Damiao (Republicans). The case was suspended in August based on a request for review (more time to decide) filed by Mendonça.
Before stopping the analysis, the rapporteur of the case, Isabelle Galeotti, voted in favor of removing the politicians. It took a position in favor of maintaining the decision of the Regional Electoral Tribunal of Roraima (TRE-RR) that impeached the governor and vice president, declared politicians ineligible for eight years and ordered new elections.
Denarium and Damiao are accused of using the public sector in favor of running for re-election in 2022. Two social programs were allegedly created in an election year, in violation of legislation on the subject, which prohibits this practice.
One programme, “Cesta da Família”, provides for the distribution of basic food baskets and income transfers. Morar Melhor was created to renovate homes. In addition, there would have been a non-record transfer of R$ 70 million to municipalities affected by the rains.
When voting to uphold the conviction of Denarium and his deputy, Galeotti said the electoral purpose of the programs was “clear.” She rejected the politicians’ argument that the initiatives were merely a continuation of existing measures.
