At a press conference late Tuesday afternoon, COP30 Executive President Anna Toni stated that the negotiations were intense and sought to take the responses on a more positive side by commenting generally on what happened on the second day of the UN climate change conference in Belém. She stated that topics such as just transition and gender had made good progress.
“The G77 had a common position on the issue of the just transition mechanism. We have already seen some positions and the larger groups becoming increasingly stronger,” Anna Toni said.
The G77 is a group representing 134 countries and has put forward a proposal calling for the creation of a formal UN instrument to ensure the energy transition is inclusive. In the proposal, the new mechanism would aim to promote social dialogue and the integration of climate justice and equality, putting people, not corporate profits, at the heart of climate action.
According to Anna Toni, there were negotiators talking about very specific topics, which is a positive thing in her estimation. “It gives us a lot of hope that the texts will be negotiated.”
The COP30 CEO also commented that the second day of negotiations was important on the topic of subnational governments. “It has been said here by everyone that the issue of subnational governance is central to the implementation agenda,” he said.
Asked about the negotiators’ meeting, which would have lasted much longer than expected, Anna Toni said the talks had been “good” and intense.
He added, “Tomorrow morning there will be a new meeting. We still do not know exactly what form it will appear, but the negotiations are definitely intense.”
