Patient reported consuming alcohol at two establishments and is intubated
The town hall of Mauáin the metropolitan area of Sao Pauloconfirmed this Friday 5 the first case of poisoning by methanol in the commune. The patient, a 47-year-old man, reported consuming doses of alcohol in two bars in the city between November 21 and 22.
After experiencing symptoms such as severe headache, fatigue, blurred vision and mental confusion, he sought medical attention and was admitted to Nardini Hospital on the 23rd. The condition progressed and the patient had to be intubated and transferred to the ICU, where he has been undergoing hemodialysis sessions since November 26. A urine analysis confirmed by Epidemiological Surveillance detected the presence of methanol.
The case comes amid the state’s adulterated beverage health crisis. According to the latest epidemiological bulletin, São Paulo records ten deaths and 49 confirmed cases of poisoning. Another 516 suspected cases have been ruled out, while three remain under investigation. There are still five deaths under analysis, occurring in the municipalities of Guariba, Saint Vincent, Sao Jose dos Campos And Cajamar.
The most recent confirmed death from poisoning occurred in Sorocaba. Felipe Henrique Alves da Silva, 26, died on August 16 and an official report released in late November highlighted an association between methanol and the use of cocaine.
Among the deaths already confirmed in the state, in addition to the case of Sorocaba, there are records in the capital — involving four men aged 26, 45, 48 and 54 years old — as well as a 30-year-old woman, in Sao Bernardo do Campo; three victims in Osasco (two men aged 23 and 25 and a woman aged 27); and a 37 year old man, Jundiaí.
Health Ministry data updated on October 29 shows 59 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning in the country with another 44 cases under investigation. Besides São Paulo, there are records in Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso.
