A resident of the city of Santos, located on the coast of São Paulo, suffered a head injury when he was attacked by a hawk while on his way to church. Valdini Amaral, 58, spoke about the incident on social media.
“Now, in Santos, you have to wear personal protective equipment to buy bread,” he wrote. He also included a photo of a helmet in the post.
According to the renewable energy consultant, bird attacks have become “routine” at the site. He demands action from the municipal administration.
He added regretfully: “I ran away several times, but I can no longer look for alternative ways to avoid being attacked by these birds. Urgent measures must be taken, before something worse happens.”

Falcons attacks in Santos
Santos City Council, when contacted about the report, said the environment group is looking for hawks in the places mentioned by residents to check whether the birds’ aggressive behavior towards humans is linked to the presence of nests and chicks.
In these cases, the animals can be sent to the Wildlife Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (CITRASS) at the Municipal Orchid Center. Records must be made by calling the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) at 153, which operates 24 hours a day, and the Environmental Police at 190.
“Management of wild animal nests is only permitted under federal legislation, in cases where there are no chicks or eggs. Unoccupied nests can only be removed after monitoring and verifying that the nest is free of eggs or chicks. In these cases, the removal must be carried out by an institution working with free-living animals after approval of the management license application to the state Ministry of Environment and Infrastructure,” he informed the city council.
Recommendations
- Regarding reports of hawks being seen in parts of Santos, City Hall recommended that residents avoid approaching the birds.
- The municipal administration also advises residents not to leave leftover food near hotspots. He warned that it “attracts prey such as rats and pigeons, thus increasing the food supply for falcons.”
- In the event of attacks, the person is recommended to seek care in a health unit for prevention, wound care and vaccinations, such as tetanus and rabies.
