The 17-year-old from Maranhão showed composure and experience to win the fourth consecutive title in the world’s leading street skate league.
Summary
17-year-old Rayssa Leal won her fourth consecutive SLS Super Crown title in São Paulo, securing a US$100,000 (R$545,000) prize by demonstrating her experience and dominance in the competition.
In addition to the title of quadruple champion of the SLS Super Crown, Rayssa Leal won a huge sum by winning, for the fourth year in a row, the women’s final of the international street skate league: according to the SLS, the prize for the champions is not less than US$100,000 (R$545,000, at the current exchange rate).
Japanese Liz Akama, runner-up, won US$12,000 (R$65,400), while Australian Chloe Covell, third, won US$11,000 (R$60,000). In total, SLS is offering US$360,000 (R$1.9 million) in prizes during the season’s grand finale, held at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera, São Paulo.
The men’s final will take place this Sunday 7 afternoon, at the São Paulo gymnasium.
Rayssa Leal gave one of the performances of her life in the SLS Super Crown decision this Sunday. Qualified directly for the final, the native of Maranhão, who even gave a “small straw” during training on Saturday 6, demonstrated unprecedented calm, the fruit of years of experience at the highest level of sport.
In the first stage of the competition, with the maneuvering lines, the Australian Chloe Covell, 15, led the competition with the best sequence, with a score of 8.2. Last to enter the track, Rayssa “destroyed” the gymnasium with another perfect sequence and sought the lead with 8.1, a tenth above.
In the individual maneuvers, the Japanese — especially Yumeka Oda — shone, but the Brazilian entered the fight with the category of the reigning champion of the time and, with a beautiful kickflip on the largest handrail, she led the fight again in the final, with a score of 8.7.
The dispute remained indefinite until the final sequence of maneuvers and, after Covell missed her final attempt, Rayssa Leal became a four-time champion before even making her run. Visibly moved, she missed her jump, but got up and fell to her knees to the cries of the Brazilian public.
