Coach Abel Ferreira once again attacked the press at a press conference after Palmeiras’ 3-1 victory over Ceará, on the 38th day of the Brasileirão. The coach appeared uncomfortable with publications that revealed his alleged salary and rewards, in addition to refuting what he called “stories” in the press about Palmeiras’ investment for the season (around 700 million reais).
“It’s absurd to talk about awards I would (supposedly) win. When you want to know, ask me, it’s an open book, ask Leila (president) and Barros (executive director). Journalists speak without knowing it, the values they speak of both in terms of rewards and salaries are absurd. They must tell the truth so as not to deceive anyone. Just ask Barros and Leila, or check with the CBF, my contract is there. The club valued our work for the titles we won,” said the coach.
Abel then cited Mirassol, fourth in the Brasileirão, as an example of a club that has performed well without major investment. The coach said that criticism that links Palmeiras’ performance to the investment made during the season are “narratives aimed at harming the club.”
“If it was about money, it would be impossible for Mirassol to end up in the same position. Why are they creating these stories? Do you want to know how the media works? I have been in Brazil for five years, I have the same rights as a Brazilian according to the law. Here it is 50% (of the press) from Rio de Janeiro, 50% from São Paulo. In São Paulo we are divided between Santos, Corinthians, Palmeiras and São Paulo. There are four rivals to one (Palmeiras). Is the press against Palmeiras? No, Palmeiras has 25% of the press, the remaining 75% create stories to harm the club.
Abel praises use of Palmeiras base
At the same press conference, Abel praised the use of Palmeiras’ young players in his work. Asked about young Larson, Verdão’s strong man in this match, the coach recalled names recently sold to European football as a sign of successful work.
“Betting at the base, I did it several times. I was very happy with Larson, (the quality) is something he showed us. It’s part of our work with the Larsons, Estêvãos, Allans, Endricks, Vitor Reis… The work is done at the base, but the one who puts a price on their heads, when they don’t play and we win or lose, it’s me. And this club can do a bit of It’s all. just look at the rivals at the top of the table and how many are betting at the bottom. We rejuvenated the cast and we fought to the end.”
Palmeiras goes on vacation and will return to work in January, when they face Portugesa in Paulistão, 11/1, away.
