Today, Tuesday (11/11/2025), United States President Donald Trump attributed to Republicans a “major victory” over their Democratic rivals in pushing the Senate to take a step forward to end the longest government shutdown in the country’s history.
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on Wednesday to end the government shutdown.
In a Veterans Day speech, Trump bragged about the fact that this progress had been made possible by Democratic senators defecting and voting with Republicans for a budget proposal to end more than 40 days of “shutdown.”
“Congratulations on a great victory,” Trump told Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson when he saw him at a ceremony honoring veterans at Arlington National Cemetery.
“We are opening our country, which should never have been closed,” the president added, using the usual terminology for such cases when public services are closed due to lack of funds, or reopened.
Later, Trump expressed confidence that the House of Representatives would win funding for the government until January.
“Only people who hate our country want to see it closed,” he told ESPN.
As a result of the government shutdown, more than one million government employees did not work or did so without pay.
This has led to disruptions in many services, such as air traffic control, prompting the government to reduce air traffic by 10% before Thanksgiving.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned reporters at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport that “we’re going to have airlines making serious calculations about whether they’re going to keep flying.”
Trump said on Monday that he would accept the reinstatement of thousands of officials who were permanently fired by the government during this “shutdown.”
Democratic division
Top Democratic leaders have pledged to oppose the bill to open the government, but the House is likely to approve it because it only needs a simple majority, which Republicans have by a narrow margin.
The agreement divided Democrats. Several prominent figures say they should have insisted on extending health insurance subsidies for low-income citizens, an issue at the heart of the budget fight.
“Pathetic,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, widely considered the preferred Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election, posted on X.
Despite his vocal opposition to the bill and voting against it, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has faced calls from some lawmakers to resign for failing to align senators.
For Democrats, the eight senators’ decision was particularly troubling, as it came just days after election victories that put Trump at a disadvantage for the first time since returning to the White House in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and California.
