Sergio Camargo exhibition at DF: the curator reveals why the artist is a fundamental figure of Brazilian culture
Open to Brasilia residents and free entry, the public is invited to explore this territory of essential shapes and discreet rhythms — a space where the artist’s poetic precision is revealed in every block, cut and surface.
The sculptor Sergio Camargo
Marcello Dantas, curator of the mega-exhibition, highlights the high anticipation of seeing Camargo’s creations in the Foyer.
“Reopening this wonderful space, heritage of the city, in front of the Conjunto Nacional, in the largest pedestrian block in Brazil, next to the library, the National Museum, the Eixo Monumental and the SESI Lab… It is truly the heart of the city, a building of extraordinary architectural quality,” he says.
For him, the choice of the National Theater as the “home” of Sergio’s poetic work was right. “One of the best in Brasilia, one of Niemeyer’s most brilliant achievements. Bringing this building back, after more than 10 years of closure, is wonderful. Doing this with Sérgio Camargo and with this quality of work is incredible,” he emphasizes.
Marcello also highlights that Brasilia is a privileged location for such a unique exhibition on the artist. “I love Brasilia. I lived here, I studied here, I know all these corners. This space – the restaurant up there, the waterfall – everything is magical, with the light, the views, the charm. It wasn’t right to close the doors. It’s special.”
The exhibition, unprecedented in Brasilia, is an achievement of Metropolises

According to the curator, the National Theater and the Foyer Room of Villa Lobos change and mark the artistic experience of contemplating the works:
“In my work I have sought to take art to unusual places. This changes the context of the experience. If every art experience is limited to the same white room, you don’t even remember where you saw something. Not here. You won’t forget this exhibition because the place is unique and special. That makes all the difference. We don’t want to turn architectural and environmental diversity into something smaller, we want it to always be different, more big, provocative,” he concludes.
