Pantone has revealed the color of the year 2026: Cloud Dancera slight shade of white that marks the first time the company has chosen a variation of the off-white in the now traditional annual choice. The brand suggests that the color be combined with warm and cool tones, which can be applied to fashion, interior design and technology. The choice, however, was criticized by some Internet users.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says that the light shade of white “offers a promise of clarity” in times of transformation, promote simplification and concentration. The institute’s vice president, Laurie Pressman, adds that Cloud Dancer reflects the collective desire to “a new beginning” and the need to recalibrate the way society lives and connects.

On social networks, many people did not appreciate the color of the year, considered by Internet users as “dystopian”taking into account the period of social and political turbulence in which the United States lives. There were also those who drew parallels with the controversy surrounding the Sydney Sweeney for American Eagle, in which she played with the words “jeans” and “genes”, which some of the public interpreted as having connotations linked to eugenics.
“It’s difficult to separate the choice of an off-white hue as the color of 2026 from the broader cultural context in which we live. When white supremacy re-emerges in national leadership and politics, dictating “white” as a symbolic color is painfully out of tune,” said one user of the Pantone post.

At an event the day after the announcement, Pantone President Sky Kelley said: predicts mixed reactions that the choice would generate:
When I found out it was going to be a different color than I imagined, I thought, “This is going to cause a lot of controversy.” But the power of the Pantone Color of the Year is that it sparks a conversation about color that everyone can participate in,” Kelley said.
The speech was also not well received by the audience, who pointed out a try to defend the brand by placing a black woman to make the official statement: “Pantone having a black woman explain that this did not go well. The debate generated by color is not supposed to be about white supremacy, but about art,” said one user.

A new color of the year
While Pantone is criticized for choosing the color of the year, other institutions are also setting their bets on which tones will dominate fashion, decor and art throughout 2026. WGSNa company specializing in trend forecasting, has determined that next year’s color will be Transformative Teal, a fusion of blue and aquatic green inspired by the diversity of nature.

The choice was made when WGSN predicted that 2026 would be the year year of reorientationmarked by increased consumer demand for greater ecological responsibility.
“This shift will influence not only consumer behavior, with an increasing focus on the future, but also production, with future consumer needs and desires reflected in color choices,” the company says.
Better received by the public than Cloud Dancer, Transformative Teal shows a conscious vision of the marketunlike the apathy suggested by Pantone, which seems content with the troubled scenario of social and political issues emerging in the world.
