Yesterday morning ended with a dramatic outcome in the area of Almirante Brown and 128 in Punta Lara, where a 25-year-old young man died after jumping into the Río de la Plata. The incident mobilized personnel from various areas who worked for more than three hours in a race against time to rescue the victim. It all started around 3:20 p.m. when, after two calls to 911, a patrol cell phone was dispatched to the La Familia campground. Upon arrival, officers located a young man wearing a red jacket, later identified as Diego Rodrigo Barboza.
According to spokesmen, Barboza had stormed into the campsite a few minutes before, shouting that he had been the victim of an illegal act, which had caused tension among those present. The owner of the restaurant intervened and decided to transport him in her truck with his partner and daughter to take him home. Since there were no legal obstacles, the police withdrew from the property.
But at 3:40 a.m. the patrol car crossed paths again with the woman’s truck, who gave them emergency signals: Barboza had jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran to the river wall. Moments later, neighbors began screaming that the young man had jumped into the water.
From that moment, an extensive device was activated: patrol officers, firefighters, prefectural and medical personnel worked in coordination to find him. Those present tried to bring a rope to him from the shore, but could not reach him. At the same time, a driver of the truck suffered a nervous breakdown and had to be transported by SAME.
The fire department continued the search until they managed to locate the young man and rescue him from the water after 4:10 p.m. Minutes later, medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene. The area was reserved for investigation and the truck involved was impounded.
The investigation was left to the Public Prosecutor’s Office No. 5, which opened a case to determine the causes of death.
