The companies Riocard and Riopar, responsible for more than two decades for the electronic ticketing system in Rio’s public transport, took Mayor Eduardo Paes to court to demand compensation for moral damage of R$50,000.
Both accuse the mayor of encouraging “slanderous, defamatory and insulting” attacks against businesses in videos and social media posts.
Paes made public comments about the company, calling company officials “mobsters,” “delinquents” and “foxes guarding the henhouse,” as well as smashing a black box bearing the name “RioCard” with a hammer.
They also point out that they launched a public campaign to discredit the old ticketing system – replaced by the new municipal card of Jaé – by attributing practices to Riocard that were not at all republican.
