Abel Ferreira in a match against Ceará, valid for the Brazilian championship
This Sunday (7), coach Abel Ferreira, of Palmeiras, announced that he was making his position available to management at the end of the season. The Portuguese coach’s decision comes after the team ended a year without winning a title, which had not happened for six years.
After the 3-1 victory against Ceará, at the Arena Castelão, the coach revealed that he had met the club’s president, Leila Pereira.
During the conversation, he said that he would keep his promise to leave command of the team due to “failures” (lack of titles). However, Leila Pereira maintained her decision to renew her contract with the coach.
— During Leila’s mandate, she requested one title per year. This year we didn’t win any and I told her: ‘Leila, we didn’t win any titles.’ You saw, several times, what she said (the desire to maintain). I made my place available to Leila, but she never doubted, she sees well beyond sporting results – said the coach.
Abel Ferreira, who has a contract with Palmeiras until 2025, is expected to stay. With the approval of Leila Pereira, the Portuguese coach has already expressed his intention to accept the proposal to extend his contract for two more years, until December 2027.
The coach has not yet signed the documents, but the formalization of the new contract should take place soon.
— In Brazilian football, things are difficult. Is Guardiola weak because he didn’t win last year? This is an assessment that management must make. The life of a coach is the keys in his hand and the suitcase at his side – he concluded.
