“Armed police intervened and arrested a man suspected of assault. He is in custody and the investigation continues to find other suspects,” police explained, adding that they do not consider the incident to be linked to terrorism.
London police were alerted around 8 a.m. (local time, 5 a.m. in Brasilia) of an incident involving “a group of people who knew each other, with an argument that escalated and left several injured,” according to Commander Peter Stevens, quoted in a statement.
A total of 21 people were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service and five were taken to hospital, he told X.
His injuries are not life-threatening, police said. “Several people were hit by what appears to be pepper spray, thrown by a group of men who then left the scene,” according to London police.
Terminal 3 remained open throughout the incident, but access to the airport, mainly by public transport, remained interrupted.
Airport authorities have advised passengers heading to Heathrow this Sunday to allow extra time for their journey.
