This Monday morning, the federal police launched Operation Tredo, with the aim of dismantling a core of public security agents suspected of collaborating with one of the largest criminal factions in Rio, the Comando Vermelho, by transmitting confidential information on police operations.

The action was supported by the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) and the Prime Minister’s Department of Home Affairs. Federal Police agents from the Sensitive Investigations Group (Gise) and the Narcotics Repression Commission (DRE) executed 11 provisional arrest warrants and six search and seizure warrants, issued by the 3rd Specialized Tribunal for Criminal Organizations.
So far, two military police sergeants have been arrested, one of them assigned to Bope itself and responsible for planning the teams sent for operations – a position that investigators say made it easier for organized crime to leak strategic information. A third target had already been arrested recently in one of the phases of Operation Containment. Three vehicles and mobile phones of the respondents were seized.
The investigation arose after the sharing, authorized by the Court, of elements collected as part of Operation Buzz Bomb, which led to the arrest of a Navy soldier in September of this year. He was responsible for the supply and operation of drones used by the Comando Vermelho both for attacks and for monitoring police actions.
From this information exchange, the PF identified military police officers who previously passed raid data to CV leaders, allowing criminals to prepare to obstruct or thwart the actions of security forces.
Those indicted will be accused of armed criminal organization, active and passive corruption, drug trafficking, homicide, illegal possession of weapons and violation of functional secrecy.
According to the PF, the name of Monday’s operation refers to the term “tredo”, which means traitor, one who breaks trust and acts with lies and disloyalty.
On September 16, 2024, Marine Corporal Rian Maurício Tavares, identified as an operator of drones used by the Comando Vermelho, was arrested in an action as part of Operation Buzz Bomb, triggered after investigations revealed that drug traffickers were using aircraft adapted to launch explosive devices and monitor police movements.
The investigations were triggered by a CV attack against Gardênia Azul militiamen, in the western zone of Rio, on February 15. On this occasion, drones equipped with explosive dispersal mechanisms were used. According to the PF, the soldiers were responsible for operating and training members of the faction in the use of this equipment.
During the execution of the arrest warrants, teams were fired upon at Complexo da Penha. Four residents were injured by shrapnel, but not seriously, and were released for medical reasons. To avoid an escalation of the confrontation, the PF temporarily suspended its action.
