The historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna
We enter a historic center which retains its original 15th century configuration intact and which is full of treasures that invite you to relive the Spanish conquest. The best place to start the visit is Adelantado Square, designed to be the main square of La Laguna, today It is the nerve center of this bustling city famous for its university atmosphere. You will find several here notable buildingssuch as the small hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel, the monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, the Nava Palace and the town hall. The square is surrounded by magnificent facades and the trees that border the central source. This will be our starting point to explore the streets of the center.
The walk takes us through cobbled streets with colorful facades which are the best witness to a rich colonial past. The Church of the Conception
Dating from the 16th century, it is the oldest building on La Laguna and also the first church on the island. It underwent various extensions and reforms and was declared a national monument. It is located in Villa de Arriba, the area where the artisans lived.
La Laguna Cathedral
And you cannot ignore this architectural gem which is also located in the historic center. It is the most important religious building in the city and is dedicated to the Virgen de los Remedios, patron saint of Tenerife. Its neoclassical stone facade is inspired by that of the cathedral of Pamplona. Another curiosity that you should know is that it is the only Spanish cathedral built with concrete and polypropylene fibers. And although it is a Catholic temple, it also houses Orthodox artwork.
The Lercaro house
In this typical Canarian house, which stands out for its wooden galleries and pretty terraces, is found Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife. The building belonged to a family of Genoese merchants who arrived on the island after the Conquest. In addition to being able to enjoy a unique architectural gem, it is worth the detour to learn more about the history of Tenerife.
A stop at the Laguna Municipal Market
If you are one of those who do not miss a market during their trip, that of La Laguna will surprise you with the large quantity of fresh products, such as cheeses, wines, potatoes and Canarian mojos.
