Petrobras plans to participate in the Battery Storage Systems Auction (BESS), scheduled for 2026. The event is part of the Capacity Reserve Auction for the power sector, with 10-year contracts and start of operations in 2028.
- Energy: The government awaits the STF’s decision to move forward with a 2.4 billion reais operation and provide aid to Eletronuclear
- Media: Paramount strikes back and makes $108 billion hostile bid for Warner, surpassing that of rival Netflix
The auction of battery systems is expected by the market and appears as an alternative to provide more security to the country’s electricity system, since it allows the storage of energy generated from intermittent sources, such as solar and wind.
According to Carlos Marçal, head of integrated energy transition management at Petrobras, the company sees batteries as a growth opportunity. But he emphasizes that the volume of investments will depend on the auction notice.
— Renewable energy is clean and good, but it is intermittent. And we see that the battery system brings stability to the system and is a way forward. This is why we are studying capacity reserve auctions.
According to the manager, the battery system is included in the company’s new business plan until 2030, in the portfolio of projects currently being evaluated. Of the $109 billion planned for the next five years, $91 billion corresponds to projects already scheduled for implementation, while $18 billion is in the so-called evaluation portfolio.
He stressed that the company was still evaluating whether it would enter alone or in partnership.
— The auction of batteries has been brought forward, with delivery scheduled for 2028. This is an opportunity, he stressed during an event at Petrobras.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the auction plans to contract electricity via batteries connected to the national system, with capacity reserve contracts. For the event, storage systems must be able to fully recharge in six hours and ensure energy availability for a minimum daily period.
