Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported today that the death toll from recent floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra rose to 961. Meanwhile, 293 people remained missing, while joint search and rescue teams recovered 40 more bodies in the affected areas.
“The search and rescue team managed to recover 40 bodies. In Aceh, the death toll increased by 23 to 389. In North Sumatra, nine more victims were found, bringing the total to 338. He added that the number of displaced residents has increased significantly. “In East Aceh and Bener Meriah regencies, the number of evacuees has increased, bringing the total number of displaced people to 1,057,482. Of course, it is our top priority to further optimize the distribution of assistance to meet the basic needs of the evacuation centers,” he said.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto led a meeting on disaster relief and recovery efforts on Sunday after inspecting several affected towns in Aceh.
He gave instructions to strengthen joint operations by the army, police, national search and rescue agency, BNPB and local governments, particularly to speed up the delivery of assistance, ensure security and restore connectivity between regions isolated by the disaster.
