Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), leader of the opposition in the Senate, stressed that the candidacy of Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-SP) is not a “trial balloon”. Speaking to journalists after a dinner with Centrão leaders on Monday evening (12/8), Marinho said that Jair Bolsonaro’s son 01 had made a “rhetorical essay” by talking about the “price” for renouncing his candidacy.
“At no time did Flávio say that his candidacy was a trial balloon. He made a rhetorical attempt by saying that the ‘prize’ was that President Bolsonaro could appear on the electoral ballot as a candidate,” the senator said.
Last Sunday (12/7), Flávio Bolsonaro declared himself ready to negotiate a “price” for abandoning the conflict: amnesty for his father, Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for leading an attempted coup.
Monday evening, Flávio Bolsonaro received party leaders to discuss his candidacy, during a dinner offered at his mansion in Brasilia. The presidents of the Progressives, Ciro Nogueira, and of União Brasil, Antonio Rueda, were present, as well as names from the Liberal Party, including Valdemar da Costa Neto.
“Senator Flávio outlined the conditions of his campaign, his candidacy, the need to be together and what he intends to present as a country project. Ciro and Rueda, who today represent a federation, were very receptive and will discuss with their parties to make a decision,” detailed Marinho after the meeting.

Marinho said the meeting made it clear that Flávio’s candidacy “was real.” “It is clear that there is a responsibility of both the president of the PP and the president of União Brasil, so that they can speak to their respective seats, with the governors, with the political actors who are distributed throughout the country, so that in the end, they can bring us a position of their respective parties,” he explained.
The senator gave more details on Jair Bolsonaro’s decision to nominate his son 01 as candidate for President of the Republic. According to Marinho, Flávio will “unify the right” and “preserve the legacy” of the Bolsonaro clan.
“Bolsonaro told Flávio that his candidacy was his, even to unify the right, so that we can preserve his legacy. And the position of the PL is very clear: the moment the main representative of our party makes this decision, we will all be with him,” he said.
After announcing last Friday (12/05) that he would be the candidate of the political group in place of his father, Flávio began to seek the support of the center parties to consolidate his electoral project.
