The Copa del Rey welcomes teams that had not yet joined the tournament into the round of 16. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club, as participants in the Spanish Super Cup, skipped the first two qualifying rounds, where enthusiasm overflowed in many regions of Spain in pursuit of becoming the giant killers. Ourense CF and Atlético Baleares obtained this label by eliminating First Division teams from the competition. Real Oviedo and Girona fell to the Galicians, while the Balearic Islands beat Espanyol, one of the teams with the best performances in the League. In this way, 17 elite teams of Spanish football will be present in the round of 16, so there will be a tie between the Primera teams, which will be played on the field of the ball kicked first. Of course, none of the four Super Cup clubs will play at home, as they are part of a separate pot and are guaranteed to face a rival from non-professional divisions at home. The draw will begin with Ourense CF, who retain the status of Federation Cup team, facing one of the four Super Cup teams. It will then be the turn of Atlético Baleares, also against another Super Cup team. The two remaining Super Cup participants will face two of the four First Federation teams that have passed the first two qualifying rounds. There will remain two from the First Federation, which will receive two teams from the First Division prize pool in their stronghold. The draw will continue by bringing together the nine from the second with another nine from the first (an attractive crossover could be a Deportivo – Celta set). In this way there will be two Primeras, which will be paired with each other in a draw whose order of extraction of the balls will dictate who is the home team and who is the visitor. The draw for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey will take place this Tuesday, December 9 in the Luis Aragonés Hall of the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas, headquarters of the RFEF, from 1:00 p.m. The approximate duration planned for its completion is 40 minutes.
