“It was a sudden thing,” says choreographer, costume designer and director Fran Ribs, describing a case that this week aroused emotion among performing arts professionals in São Paulo. Last Saturday evening (6), the young actor Vitor Eduardo Dumont Ferreira, aged 25, died during the premiere of the musical “Alladdin”, at the Municipal Theater of Osasco, after suffering a sudden illness on stage. The artist played the character of Genius and fainted while delivering the text in front of the audience.

At the time—in the last 20 minutes of the production’s second act—after Vitor lost consciousness and fell unconscious, the rest of the cast thought the situation was an improvisation in the form of an onstage “joke.” Moments later, when they heard a whistling sound coming from the boy’s microphone, which showed that the artist was having difficulty breathing, all the professionals rushed to help him, and the performance quickly ended, with the curtains closed.

The actor was known by his colleagues for the quality of the improvisations he performed. “The show went very well. Everything was fine. It was Vitor’s best role as the Genie. He came in an incredible way, in an absurd way. He gave the text, he was nervous, it was visible — when you rehearse for a long time, you know when a person gives a little more time between one word and another,” said Lucas Maíno, interpreter of the protagonist Aladdin in the play.
Lucas says that when he saw his colleague “fall” and not get up again, he understood that the situation was worrying. “It all happened very quickly. The scene lasted about two minutes. And when I saw him fall, I thought of Jimmy Early. (role of Eddie Murphy)in the movie ‘Dreamgirls’. When Vitor saw “Dreamgirls”, he told me he loved this scene (in which Jimmy dramatically faints during a performance)and I said: ‘Invent a place to put that in Gênio'”, recalled the artist, through a video published on Instagram.
Choreographer Fran Ribs also took to social media to clarify the matter. He says a team of medical professionals tried to resuscitate Vitor for an hour.

“When I arrived, they had already undressed him, they had already left him aside, because we thought it was a crisis. We were trying to do everything we could. There was a firefighter, there was a dentist, there was everything you can imagine. There was a medical student, who was super charitable. The EMS took 20 minutes to arrive, but he arrived. They tried to resuscitate my friend for an hour,” said Fran moved as she detailed the situation.
In a statement, the city of Osasco regretted what happened and indicated that Samu had been called, but confirmed the death on the spot. On social media, the municipal dance and theater school Clayds Zwing, responsible for the production, published a note informing that Vitor was a student in the musical theater course. “Vitor left to do what he loved, where he always had his place: the stage,” said the institution in a press release. The wake and burial took place last Monday (8), at the Parque das Cerejeiras memorial cemetery, in Jardim Ângela, in the capital of São Paulo.
