One of the rarest diamonds on the planet is set to be sold at auction next December in the United States, in a sale that will attract the attention of collectors and investors in the luxury goods market. The stone, called “Angelina”, a 6.17-carat pink diamond, was valued at £1.37 million (about R$9.2 million) and will be the highlight of an online auction promoted by Heritage Auctions, based in Dallas, Texas. The sale ends on December 3, according to the What’s The Jam portal.

The jewels, which are oval in shape and 13 mm long, are mounted on an 18-karat white and rose gold ring. According to experts, less than 0.01% of all diamonds mined in the world have a natural pink color, and among these diamonds, very few exceed five carats. The size and purity of the piece make The Angelina even rarer. The diamond is classified as “fancy pink”, with a clarity grade of VVS2, which indicates the presence of microscopic inclusions that are practically invisible to the naked eye.
According to Heritage’s Director of Fine Jewelry, Gina D’Onofrio, pink diamonds form deep in the Earth’s crust under intense heat and pressure that changes their molecular structure and bends light to produce the distinctive pink color. She explains that most of these stones are small and have imperfections, making Fancy Pink Angelina an example of exceptional purity and proportion.
Interest in gemstones of this type is driven by both beauty and appreciation. Jewelry of this color is rarely seen at auctions, and when it does appear it causes great controversy among collectors and investors. The market for pink stones has been growing since the closure of the Argyle mine in East Kimberley, Australia, which is responsible for about 90% of the global production of these diamonds.
For Christian Spofforth, UK shipping manager at Heritage Auctions, the closure of mine activities has caused demand to skyrocket and the value of larger examples has increased to unprecedented levels. Angelina’s auction is defined as a rare opportunity to acquire a practically unique gem – a combination of natural beauty and rarity transformed into a symbol of luxury and exclusivity.
