Matias Almeydathe Argentine coach of SevilleWas Protagonist of a tense and unpleasant moment last Sunday at the Mestalla Stadium, in the 1-1 draw against Valencia for the Spanish championship. The former River and international player was reprimanded in the first half and during the half-time break, before returning to the pitch, he had a dialectical exchange with referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, but the episode increased the tension when the linesman Guadalupe Porras, who was the assistant who was in the Almeyda sector at the time of the reprimand, intervened.
The technical director complained to the referee after the sanction in the 28th minute of the first half, after the footballer Peque (Gerard Fernández Castellano) also received a yellow card. After this situation, Almeyda argued with the judge Cuadra Fernández and after Guadalupe Porras intervened in the conversation, the Sevilla coach said to her: “I have three wives, misses, daughters. The respect goes through the other side.”
This sentence suggested that the warning he had been given may in fact have been inappropriate wording aimed at the linesman and not the head referee. Speaking on Movistar+, Pelado Almeyda denied disrespecting the assistant and remarked: “I don’t measure because we are the same.” The referee also stated in the minutes the reason for reprimanding Almeyda: “Because he made technical comments about one of my decisions.”
The television cameras captured the awkward moment that occurred in the dressing room tunnel before the protagonists started the second half. The newspaper Marca described the dialogue in detail:
Let us explain it to you: you want to be right, so you are right. That’s it.”
Matías Almeyda: “No, but you are right. You explain to me why you warned someone (yellow card for Peque), which I also told him (to assistant referee Guadalupe Porras). And he said: you don’t respect me.”
Guillermo Cuadra Fernández: “That’s it, that’s it: you’re right.”
MA: “But how is it?”
GCF: “I’ll explain.”
MA: “Then I’m right. Get me the yellow one.”
GCF: “Well, you have it.”
MA: “But why did you reprimand me?”
Guadalupe Porras: “That’s it…”
MA: “But why did you reprimand me? I have three wives, misses, daughters. Respect goes through the other side.”
After the game, Almeyda explained the situation to the media: “I speak with respect and I like to be respected. I just asked the assistant why Peque was reprimanded and she couldn’t answer me.” He told me I didn’t respect him. I have three daughters, a wife, a mother, I don’t respect women. I like that they answer me well. And I was reprimanded for that. Then I tried to talk to the referee and he told me nothing, that was the reason.”
