The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado, will not be present at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony this Wednesday (10), in Oslo, as Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, confirmed to the NRK channel. The ceremony was to take place at Oslo City Hall, attended by King Harald and Queen Sonja, as well as Latin American leaders such as Argentine President Javier Milei and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

According to Harpviken, María Corina “unfortunately is not in Norway” and will not take the stage at the start of the event. Asked about the fate of the opponent, the director replied that he had no information. The absence of the Venezuelan leader is linked to the travel ban imposed by the authorities of her country around ten years ago, as well as the fact that she has been out of public circulation for more than a year.
The girl will give a speech and receive the honor
According to Reuters, the ceremony will continue and the prize will be received by Ana Corina Sosa Machado, daughter of the winner. According to Nobel Committee protocol, when the laureate cannot be present, a member of his or her close family is designated to receive the medal and deliver the traditional speech of thanks.
María Corina Machado, 58, was announced the winner on October 10, “for her tireless work for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her fight for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” according to the organization’s justification. Part of the award’s dedication was addressed to United States President Donald Trump, whom the opponent declared worthy of the honor.
The opposition leader largely won the primaries for the 2024 presidential election, but was unable to run. After the disputed election that declared Nicolas Maduro the winner, the vote went underground in August, when arrests of opponents intensified.
