For the first time in 28 years, Democrats won Miami’s mayoral election. The largest electoral college in Florida, Miami voters have voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in the last three presidential elections.
Democratic candidate Eileen Higgins won 60% of the vote against Trump-backed Republican Emilio T. Gonzalez, according to projections from CNN and the Miami Herald. She becomes the first woman to rule the city.
This victory, in a state where the Republican president spends most of his weekends – in his seaside resort of Mar-a-Lago – reinforces the streak of electoral successes of the Democratic Party, one year before the mid-term elections to Congress.
In recent weeks, Democrats have won gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as New York City mayoral elections.
In Miami, Higgins, 61, promised “ethical and responsible governance that brings tangible results to the population.”
The election was marked by a turnout of only 20%, in a city with a large Cuban-American population, traditionally Republican.
Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level since he returned to office in January, largely because of the rising cost of living, which many Americans attribute to Trump’s tariffs, according to polls.
