The number of primary school pupils has improved, but standards remain low
Few people know, but in addition to the Learn tests – which are nationwide – many districts also have their own standardized assessments. They measure the knowledge of the students mathematics and language.
The city has finished processing the initial results of its own tests, which it administers every two years to seventh-grade elementary school students and third-grade high school students.
And the results showed an improvement in primary school in both disciplines compared to 2023; and a “draw” in high school.
In primary school, the proportion of students who achieve the goals In mathematics it rose by 7.2 percentage points and in language by 3.8 percentage points.
In secondary school, however, performance in mathematics improved by 4.5 points, while performance in language decreased by 3.3 points.
It’s about the tests FEPBAwhich is collected from all students completing primary school, in public and private schools (now there are 36,000) and the TESBAwhich rates those who graduate from the average high school: more than 35,000.
The implementation of the FEPBA test began in 2013 and the TESBA test in 2017. As a reference point, the average score of these years was set at 500, so that the development of learning can be measured.
The new results show an overall improvement. In primary mathematics The score rose from 503.2 points in 2023 to 520.7 this year, while in language it rose from 494.2 to 504.5.
In secondary school there was also progress in mathematics, from 505.5 to 518.8 points, and a slight recovery in language, rising from 501.1 to 502.4.
As is happening across the country, The big challenge for the education system remains mathematics.
That’s what the numbers show Only 4 out of 10 students have the necessary knowledge in this subject, both those attending primary and secondary school.
Official satisfaction
The Buenos Aires Ministry of Education called the press yesterday to present these results. Minister Mercedes Miguel emphasized that this has been the case for the last two years “the best improvement in math since the exam”.
“We have significantly exceeded the goals we had set for 2025. This is who we are I am very grateful to the teachers, Without them it would have been impossible,” he said.

Clarion He asked Miguel, who said that this was the case with Learning, but not necessarily with PISA, as it measured different skills and competencies.
Miguel also put emphasis on it the “School in Focus” program. This is a more specific educational intervention in the 503 schools in Buenos Aires that had poorer results.
According to the official interpretation, this action could have resulted in more students leaving the lowest performance levels, driving up all results. Anyway, they say, they’re waiting for it an external assessment of the program that checks whether this was the case.
At the press conference, Miguel was accompanied by the Undersecretary of Learning Management, Inés Cruzalegui. the director of the Comprehensive Evaluation Unit of Educational Quality and Equity, Samanta Bonelli; and Undersecretary of Education Planning and Innovation Oscar Ghillione.
Officials interpreted that the better results were due to this Alignment What is the difference between the new curriculum design for elementary and secondary schools (which this administration inaugurated last year), the teacher training that accompanies the new content, and the evaluation itself?
For Miguel it is a “Pedagogical coherence”which includes various measures promoted by the relevant management, such as focusing on basic learning in language and mathematics, restricting the use of mobile phones in class or banning platforms such as Roblox in school classrooms.
