Corruption scandal involves allies of Zelensky
Parliament on Monday launched efforts to impeach Galoshenko, who according to an investigation by Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) was involved as energy minister in a network that received at least $100 million in kickbacks related to contracts that a subsidiary of the state atomic energy company, Energoatom, awarded to private companies.
According to what the prosecutor from the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) said yesterday in court, the alleged head of the conspiracy, former associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky and 50% owner of the production company he founded, businessman Timur Mendich, had direct influence on Galoshenko and on the then Defense Minister and current head of the National Security Council Rustam Omerov, who also headed the Ukrainian negotiating team in the latest contacts with Russia.
After the struggle for the independence of anti-corruption agencies
According to the investigation, released at a time when Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was being bombed daily by Russia, Galoshenko, who was energy minister for four years, received “personal favors” from Mendic in exchange for control of money flowing into the energy sector.
Galoshenko’s duties were assumed by Deputy Minister of European Integration Lyudmila Sojak.
This scandal comes a few months after an internal struggle, in the summer, for control of the Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies, which prompted Ukrainians to take to the streets, against a law limiting the independence of these authorities and Zelensky was forced to withdraw from it.
