The PSdeG will respond with “a strong statement” to the accusations known this Tuesday of alleged sexual harassment on the part of the president of the Provincial Council of Lugo, mayor of Monforte and provincial leader of the party, José Tomé, towards several colleagues and that … They would be collected via the internal complaints channel. The news, revealed by the show Cuatro ‘Código Diez’, has frozen Galician socialism, which awaits with amazement the reaction of its leaders, also singled out by the complainants for having supposedly covered Tomé.
Early in the morning, the PSdeG communication channel for journalists who cover its news confirmed that the agenda of Secretary General José Ramón Gómez Besteiro, expected at an event in Padrón, next to the migrant reception center, was maintained. But a few minutes before 11 a.m., it was announced that Besteiro canceled his schedule. Questioned by informants, PSdeG communications officials only announced that the party would make “a forceful declaration”, but without specifying whether it would be limited to a reference to the media or whether Besteiro would appear at party headquarters to express its content. It has also not been specified when this official reaction will take place.
Another singled out by the complainants, the secretary of the organization Lara Méndez, participates this morning in the meeting of the spokespersons committee of the Galician Parliament, in his capacity as vice-spokesperson of the socialist group. However, she is not expected to deal with journalists, since it is usually her colleague Elena Espinosa who appears after the meeting of this body. Circumstances can change the scenario.
The day’s agenda also includes an appearance by Tomé in his town hall, Monforte, for the presentation of a rural bus. In statements to El Progreso on Tuesday evening, the councilor of Montfortino categorically denied these accusations and advanced the adoption of legal measures. In addition, he limited the complaints to a defamation campaign against him and against the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez.
The PSdeG has been in shock since the existence of complaints from six women linked to the PSOE, sent to the party’s internal channel, in which Tomé is accused of alleged situations of sexual harassment. Among the content of the complaints made public by the program “Code Diez”, there were touching, inappropriate messages and even insinuations that it would be possible to offer a job in exchange for sex. “He has been sexually harassing several women in the party across the province for some time. It doesn’t matter whether you are an activist, supporter, municipal councilor, worker, mayor, journalist or elected official. “None of them are saved,” claims one of the complaints.
