
Teresa Peramato promised her position before the king this Wednesday as the new state attorney general, replacement of Álvaro García Ortizsentenced by the Supreme Court to two years in prison for the offense of revealing secrets, during an event organized at the Zarzuela Palace.
A ceremony in the presence of the highest representatives of state powers, like the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez; the president of the Congress, Francina Armengol; and that of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Isabel Perelló, in addition to the Minister of Justice, Félix Bolaños, as chief notary of the Kingdom.
Peramato pledged his position in front of a copy of the Constitution opened by Article 124 relating to the public prosecutor after that same Wednesday, the Official State Gazette (BOE) published his appointment in a royal decree as well as another that dismissed García Ortiz, “thanking him for the services rendered.”
“I promise on my conscience and on my honor to faithfully fulfill the obligations of the office of Attorney General of the State with loyalty to the King, and preserve and ensure the preservation of the Constitution as a fundamental norm of the State”, promised Peramato (Salamanca, 1962), considered one of the great promoters of judicial specialization in the fight against gender-based violence.
Peramato got support unanimously of the CGPJ
Throughout his career he has held positions such as Deputy Prosecutor at the Violence Against Women Section to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid or Prosecutor of the Chamber against Violence against Women between 2021 and 2025.
The State Attorney General provides senior leadership and representation to the prosecution. A position appointed and revoked by the king, on proposal from the Governmentafter having heard the General Council of the Judicial Power and after having evaluated its appropriateness by the corresponding Commission of the Congress of Deputies.
Garcia Ortiz resigned from office after being convicted to 2 years of disqualification from the position of Attorney General for the crime of disclosure of confidential data linked to Alberto González Amador, associate of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
The Council of Ministers formalized this Tuesday the appointment of Peramato, who after obtaining the unanimous support of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ)appeared on December 4 before the Justice Commission of the Congress of Deputies.
