A 48-year-old woman, resident of Catarroja, died Tuesday afternoon at La Fe Hospital in Valencia after remaining in a coma for three days in the intensive care unit (ICU). The victim had been beaten in the early hours of Friday to Saturday, reportedly by his partner. The Alfafar Civil Guard arrested the alleged attacker, aged 43, who was brought to court yesterday, as confirmed by the armed institute, but was released provisionally with precautionary measures before learning of the woman’s death.
The Sueca Court today issued a new arrest warrant against him, given the risk of flight, and the man was arrested in Catarroja. At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, the president of the Court of Violence against Women number 1 of Sueca decreed provisional detention, communicated and without bail for the detainee, whom he accuses of crimes of homicide and habitual mistreatment, reports the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).
The attack happened at dawn after a heated argument at home, as neighbors had warned, and the next morning it was the couple who called emergency 112 to say their partner had had an accident and was unconscious at home.
When she was treated by medical services, the woman’s injuries did not correspond to an accidental fall as her companion claimed. The woman received blows all over her body, particularly to the head, with significant head trauma, which would explain the coma.
The alleged attacker was arrested for the first time last weekend because his testimony about what happened at the couple’s home did not correspond to the victim’s injuries, and yesterday Tuesday he was made available to the Court of Violence Against Women of Sueca, where his owner gave several testimonies and requested the appearance in prison provided for by the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to sources close to the case.
During this appearance, which took place before the woman’s death, the only accused, namely the Prosecutor’s Office, did not request the preventive detention measure, so the judge could not accept it and issued a restraining order and a ban on communication with the victim.
According to the TSJCV, there are no previous complaints of acts of gender violence on the part of the detainee against the victim, although the man has a criminal record of this type against other women.
The Government Delegation against Gender Violence is already collecting data on the woman’s death and the Civil Guard is investigating this possible case of gender violence.
So far this year, 45 women have been murdered by their partner or ex-partner. Since official statistics began in 2003, there have been 1,340 women.
