Madrid, November 12 (European Press) –
Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Tuesday the temporary suspension of communications “and other dealings” with US security agencies, citing Washington’s attacks against ships in Caribbean waters.
He said on his account on the social media network
In a brief message, the president specified that the measure would remain in effect “as long as the missile attack on boats in the Caribbean continues,” referring to the bombings that the US military began last September that left more than 60 people dead, which the White House defends as operations against drug trafficking, and which international organizations and the United Nations condemn as “extrajudicial executions.”
“The war on drugs must be subordinated to the human rights of the peoples of the Caribbean,” he added of the decision that escalated tensions between Bogotá and the Donald Trump administration.
Petro made these statements after it became clear that the United Kingdom had acted in the same direction, a point that was first reported by CNN and later by British media such as The Times and The Guardian, although until now there has been no confirmation in this regard from No. 10 Downing Street.
Sky News quoted a British government spokesman as saying simply: “The United States is our closest partner in the areas of defence, security and intelligence, but in keeping with a well-established principle, I will not comment on intelligence matters.”
Furthermore, when asked about attacks launched by the United States against ships in Caribbean and Pacific waters, he noted that such “decisions are a matter” for the North American country and that “questions as to whether or not something is contrary to international law are the responsibility of a competent international tribunal, not governments.”
