After a Tuesday with rain all day and record traffic jams in the city of São Paulo, this Wednesday (10/12) remained chaotic due to winds blowing at almost 100 kilometers per hour. The gusts occurred amid an extratropical cyclone formed in the southern region of Brazil.
The wind hampered air and ground transportation and parks were closed. In addition, firefighters have already been called to more than 500 calls regarding falling trees.

Lack of energy and water
Throughout the day, more than 2.2 million homes were without electricity in the metropolitan region and the capital. According to Enel, 1,300 teams from the distributor have been mobilized on the ground and are working to restore energy supplies.
In addition, the São Paulo State Sanitation Base Company (Sabesp) reported that water supply was also affected in the capital and at least nine cities in the Greater SP. The lack of electricity prevents pumping to homes.

Transportation affected
During transportation, wind reflections also appeared. Lines 4-Yellow and 10-Turquoise faced power outages and trains running at longer intervals. Passengers reported delays at stations and slower boarding times in the morning.
Due to strong winds, airlines canceled flights and diverted landings and takeoffs at Congonhas Airport. In a statement this afternoon, Aena, the concessionaire responsible for managing the airport, said 45 arrivals and 48 departures were canceled, due to airline operational decisions, air traffic control determinations and air network adjustments.
Oscillating buildings
The strong winds even shook buildings in the city of São Paulo, causing discomfort, dizziness and nausea among workers in the area of Avenida Faria Lima, in the western zone.
Earthquakes, elevator failures and power outages have been reported. Containers containing liquids, such as bottles and glasses of water, swung “on their own”, probably due to the impact of gusts of wind.
