The mayor of Valencia, the popular María José Catalá, criticized the Secretary for Equality of the PSOE, Pilar Bernabé, for her “a complicit silence” faced with cases of machismo and sexual harassment within the Socialist Party. “It failed miserably,” he said. … » affirmed the government delegate in the Valencian Community and leader of the PSPV in the capital of Turia.
This was stated by journalists questioned about the current situation of Pedro Sánchez’s government after these cases were revealed in the socialist ranks.
Catalá assured that “the veil of big lie of the Socialist Party“, since he recalled that “one of its theoretically essential values is the defense of equality and of women”. He regretted that there were complaints which “were not followed up on” and which “were reduced to silence” without “taking the appropriate decisions”.
“The feminism of the Socialist Party was the big lie, because the defense of women cannot depend on whether or not it suits the leader at any time. You always have to do it,” he said.
As he argued, both the PSOE leadership and “particularly” its equality officer have failed “miserably”. “His complicit silence is embarrassing and I am ashamed,” he said of Barnabas. “What I regret most is being Valencian”he said.
Also referring to the Organizing Secretary, Rebeca Torró, Catalá stressed that “she expected much more from the Valencians in the national leadership of the Socialist Party”.
And to conclude: “In this context of corruption, prostitution paid with public money and the silencing of women who have suffered abuse within a party, the best thing that the PSOE can do is to reestablish itself, because obviously its founding values are all absolutely on the ground”.
